Jane Mackewn studied Physics at UCL graduating in 1999. She then trained to be Nuclear Medicine clinical scientist attaining state registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) in 2003. Jane has always had a strong interest in PET-MR research and undertook a part time PhD to build one of the world’s first MR compatible PET scanners for pre-clinical studies (2002-2009). She has then gone on to be involved in the development of PET-MR having a significant role in the EU funded Hyperimage project using an SiPM MR compatible PET scanner built by Philips Research in Aachen (2011-2016). Jane continues to work as a clinical scientist at the PET centre at St Thomas’ hospital managing a small team of medical physicists for both clinical and research support roles of the PET centre, acting as a lead Medical Physics Expert (MPE) for the department.
Practical Experience of using the mMR for Clinical Research Studies
The Siemens PET-MR system was installed at the end of 2014 in King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’ PET centre. Currently there are a number of PET-MR research studies running on the scanner predominantly in neurology and oncology. We present our practical experience of key technical issues associated with this research, such as the accuracy of attenuation correction and interference measurements between the PET and MRI scanners.
